It's clear that Sullivan has opened the world to her.Rory and Lorelai are still experiencing fall out from their epic post-dance battle. She runs all over, asking for the names of everything. A word she heard as a baby comes back to her, and she knows that "w-a-t-e-r" spells water. As Helen feels the water rush over one hand, Sullivan finger-spells "water" into the other. Sullivan tries various approaches, and after one chaotic meal, Sullivan grabs Helen and forces her to the pump, to fill the pitcher of water she knocked over. She must first understand the concept of language. Helen learns to imitate the finger-motions, but does not connect them to anything. Sullivan begins by teaching Helen basics, then how to use her hands to spell out the names things. Her parents hire Annie Sullivan, once blind herself, to be her teacher. She has no knowledge or understanding, and just grabs whatever she wants and breaks whatever she doesn't want. Helen Keller, blind and deaf from an illness she had as a toddler, is treated more as a pet than a child by her family. It's an amazing and very important movie! Watch it. Is the reason I would probably say 10+ for most. Other than that, the repeated wrestling of the teacher with the deaf /blind student, biting, etc. There is one rather adult monologue regarding an asylum that is spoken about quickly and just seems to go over the heads of younger audiences. The original black and white movie is the only one I have ever watched. If you ever think you can't overcome something, just think back to the story of Helen Keller. EVERYONE, absolutely everyone should watch this at least once. This is a very emotionally intense movie, it sticks with you. (Afterwards he remarked on the Amazon description with "drama-gentle-intense,etc" and thought it should have said rough and not "gentle".). I wouldn't have wanted my child to have watched this any younger and he is quite into history.

I won't downplay the amount of drama and intensity in this movie. If your child can handle a movie with a lot of yelling and dramatic scenes and already understands the history regarding slavery, women's rights and such then it should be okay. I didn't want to rate age appropriateness as this one really depends on the child. I remember watching this when I was growing up.
